Still I think the arc of political history won’t right itself soon or won’t do this at all.
My prime beef is how religion has gotten enmeshed with politics. People will vote into office leaders who thump the bible. Yet I’m no fan of organized religion.
This blog entry is going to be my rant about this topic. If you think the political process leaves a lot to be desired you’re right. This is the truth: not only some day soon could you be denied an abortion–you could be forced to have an abortion.
Where else has anyone talked about schizophrenia and sex? Nowhere. I’m doing this now as a female blogger.
At HealthCentral years ago I wrote a news article about how a female judge in Boston mandated that a psychotic woman with schizophrenia get an abortion and be sterilized. The woman kept getting pregnant and having kids she couldn’t care for. Her first kid was being raised by her parents.
I’m female. As early as when I was a young teen I didn’t want to have kids. Then when I was 22 I was diagnosed and that sealed the deal: I didn’t want to bring into the world a kid who could have a chronic disability.
Yet Republicans seem to think I don’t have the right to choose not to have kids.
They do not care if a pregnant woman becomes psychotic because she can’t take her medication. They don’t care if no one will adopt a baby with a genetic risk for schizophrenia. They don’t care if government policies deny benefits to a person once she does give birth. They don’t care that most actively psychotic people can’t find the job that would make a government benefits subsistence unnecessary. They don’t care that telling your employer you have schizophrenia is tantamount to career suicide.
The evangelical argument that getting married floats all boats and lifts people out of poverty is a reckless myth too. What poor person getting married to another poor person is going to increase their wealth if they have schizophrenia and can’t get a decent job?
Yet more than the fact that these arguments are shot through with Swiss cheese holes–I live in the real world where I know that real people aren’t statistics.
I live in the real world where most guys expect women to have sex on the third date and most women go along with this.
I live in the real world where not a lot of people choose celibacy as a form of birth control.
This is the real world, not the world where Conservatives like Mike Huckabee claim more women should just “shut their legs.” Yo–Conservative dude–nobody’s shutting their legs in America today so deal with it.
Why aren’t you attacking the guys who expect woman to have sex on the third date? It takes two people to have sex–so why aren’t you telling guys to shut their legs?
It’s still a man’s, man’s, man’s world. It’s still women bearing the brunt of sexism, shaming, and violence in the world.
It’s still women being forced to choose when they have to flee an abusive husband.
It’s still women being told they should have no choice in the matter of their own sexual health.
When are guys going to get attacked for wearing condoms? When are guys going to get attacked for treating women like shit? When are guys going to get attacked for being sluts?
It’s time to stand up and say: “Those arguments have more holes than Swiss cheese.”
Go give that cheese to Geronimo Stilton. I’m not buying it. I smell a rat.
